Fire in Flushing....

I'm mad late on blogging this, but a fire actually took down some businesses in Flushing, Queens a few days ago. Coincidentally, I was around that section of Flushing before the fire happened. The next day I noticed this....

Yeah, they decided to demolish the place. Probably due to safety concerns. Check out NY1 for the full scoop.

Ludacris, Nas & Jay-Z on a track together.....

SO I was checking out SOHH and came across this little tidbit of news that got me even more excited about the upcoming Ludacris album. Peep the news from Gyant:

Chris teamed up with T-Pain, Lil' Wayne, Chris Brown, Rick Ross, Spike Lee, Chris Rock, Ving Rhames, T.I., Plies, Jaime Foxx, the Trackmasters, 9th Wonder, Don Cannon and DJ Premier on his musical project. But, the record that's going to have all the hip-hop heads gagging is the record that teams Ludacris up with Jay-Z and Nas.

That's right, SOHH Atlanta can exclusively reveal that the other "King Of The South" has just upped the ante by securing the creme de la creme of rap music. The song is called "I Do It For Hip-Hop" and its F-I-Y-A-H! [Goose, drop a bomb on that!] Now you already know that if my hatin' ass co-signs a tune, then it's got to be ill.

It's easily the song of the year. OMG!

But it gets better because for anyone who thinks that Ludacirs isn't a real MC anymore, or that he's fallen off - needs to get this album. No matter what your hip-hop level is, Ludacris' got you.

Sounds crazy! I know when they previewed the album in Tribeca last month they didn't mention this song whatsoever. Perhaps, they knew hyping something like this up might cause it to leak. Something tells me that in the next month or so it'll probably leak, especially if the critical reception is as good as Gyant's.

On a much lighter note than the last video...

Peeped this via Yahoo!

Wow That's Pretty Messed Up...

Via Brave New Films

As weird as it may sound, I think I may have had a harder time watching this than Cannibal Holocaust. Not that blatant racism is anything new, nor is it anything that I haven't experienced myself, but it's almost cringe-worthy watching it play out during a presidential campaign.

Much like when I watched Cannibal Holocaust, my immediate thoughts are of the "civil" society we live in. I mean this is how McCain's audience really views an Ivy-league educated, bi-racial lawyer from Hawaii?

I know it's not a laughing matter, but for some reason I also think of the Borat movie from a few years back. Despite it's humor, the underlying idea behind the movie was that it was about a man pretending to be a perpetual foreigner who goes about his daily routine in America, only to expose it's ignorance (while, perhaps, exposing his own). I guess this election has exposed even more of it.

Here's a quote from Babble :

Old Town Ale House has some new wall art. The portrait was done by Bruce Elliot, bar owner, and he said of the piece, "I don't see how [Palin] could be offended by this. I made her into a sex figure."

Social Interventionism...

http://time-blog.com/looking_around/munch.scream.jpg

I'm like a good 4-5 days late with this, but better late than never. So I was looking at the NY Times the other day and came across this article. Here’s an excerpt:

WASHINGTON — Having tried without success to unlock frozen credit markets, the Treasury Department is considering taking ownership stakes in many United States banks to try to restore confidence in the financial system, according to government officials.

Treasury officials say the just-passed $700 billion bailout bill gives them the authority to inject cash directly into banks that request it. Such a move would quickly strengthen banks’ balance sheets and, officials hope, persuade them to resume lending. In return, the law gives the Treasury the right to take ownership positions in banks, including healthy ones.

Hey isn’t this what I was talking about a few weeks ago?

I mean f’ing A, I didn’t think this would actually happen….

I did a bit of poking around and found the form of socialism I was talking about, according to Wikipedia, is called social interventionism:

...an ideology which involves the intervention of a government or an organization in social affairs.[1] Such policies can include provision of charity or social welfare as a means to alleviate social and economic problems of people facing financial difficulties; provision of health care; provision of education; provision of safety regulations for employment and products; delivery of food aid or recovery missions to regions or countries negatively affected by an event; adoption programs; etc.

To be fair, this may not necessarily be a bad thing--especially since it seems that the world economy is suffering now too.

I guess the real question is, if the government does nationalize the banking system, how much of a free market do we truly live in?

Another Movie Night...

So Neurotic Neuron, Professor P and I had nothing better to do on a Saturday evening but watch this movie....

The image “http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/11/Cannibal_Holocaust_movie.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Yes, we really had nothing better to do on a Saturday night but to watch one of the most controversial films of the 20th Century. So outrageous was this film that the director was arrested on the grounds that he had produced a snuff film, and was not released until all of the actors proved that they were still alive.

This was by far the most disturbing film I think any of us had ever seen (although Oldboy is in the running). All of the animal executions in the movie were real and the make-up and effects are so well, done you could see how the Italian court might have believed that this was real.

I don't want to go into much detail, since a majority is too graphic for most people to stomach on a Sunday afternoon. There are some positives to the movie. At it's essence, the movie is a criticism of "civilized" society. The way the West views itself in comparison to indigenous people, has often been looked at as debatable and controversial topic. The quote-unquote "civilized" society has often deemed indigenous tribes as crude, less-advanced, backwards and dangerous due to their practices. However, the discovery and treatment of these indigenous people by members of this "civilized" society has often been even more cruel and unusual than the culture that they wish to domesticate. This theme runs concurrent in the last half of the Cannibal Holocaust.

So despite the grotesqueness, there was a message made that was muddled by the over-the-top gore and extreme use of animal cruelty. Then again, it's not as if the "civilized" society has to worry about this...

Visually Bloggable: Kanye's "Love Lockdown" Premier on Ellen

It's not usual for me to do 2 Visually Bloggables in a row, but heck, why not...

By way of Nah Right

Over-the-top. Non-sensical. Artistic. Exploitive.

Brilliant.

Why is it brilliant? I'm not really sure. But everything about it (including the actual song) taps into the general Kanye fanbase and once again delivers the non-conventional music tapestry that made over a million people buy his last joint and even twice as many to buy a pair of blindfold sunglasses.

Maybe that's why I'm a fan. It's the mere thought me not quite sure why I like the song, but knowing that I like it. For whatever reason, every time Kanye has dropped an album he's either mirrored the same feelings I was feeling at the moment, or foreshadowed how I would be feeling. And I know I'm not the only one. Anyone bumping him is more than likely feeling the same way.

My Vandals finally came this past weekend. Didn't take any vanity shots of them, but snapped a few pics while I wa waiting for the bus...

I liked the vintage-ness of them. For whatever reason I always buy new black sneakers come Fall. I've also had my eyes on the Air Jordan 19/4 pack that came out the other month, and I been anticipating the 20/3 pack that's supposed to come out.
