Signs of A Bad Economy: The Corporate Consolidation

Big ups to Mahogany Girl for all the news updates and links!

In the last few weeks the following companies have announced that they would be cutting back on jobs: NY Times, Radio One Inc, Starbucks, Morgan Stanley, and Macys. Today it was revealed that New Line Cinema would be "consolidated" into parent company Time Warner (one of those ubiquitous corporations that we all agree, in some way, shape or form, owns our lives). Within the last week or so it's been publicly documented that Time Warner was undergoing some type of "corporate restructuring." I'm guessing that the dissolution of New Line is part of it.

"After a four-decade run that saw its transformation from an upstart indie company exploiting rude John Waters movies and gory horror flicks to a mini-major winning Oscars and billion-dollar worldwide grosses with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, New Line is being absorbed into parent company Time Warner's Warner Bros. Pictures."

Kanye Interview over @ The Moment

"Do you have your own line?

K: My line is Pastel. I wanted to be a fashion designer since before I wanted to be a rapper. Nobody said I could be a rapper and now I’m the be-all and end-all of music. Next, I’m gonna be the be-all and end-all of fashion. If I can humbly say so myself."

Very brief interview with Kanye and NY Times blog The Moment. I figure I throw it on here for all of the Kanye heads reading this blog. Click here to read.

**Hey this is my 100th post..woo-hoo!

Sprint Taking the L....

On top of losing almost 700,000 valuable customers who have annual contracts during the fourth quarter, the company predicted it would lose another 1.2 million during the first quarter and would see additional losses in the second quarter.

''Our business is not performing well right now,'' Hesse told analysts during a conference call, blaming poor customer service in recent years. ''We are working aggressively to turn this around but our financial performance will not improve overnight.''

Found this @ NYTimes (also posted on Mahogany Girl)...Normally I'd put this in the Random News section (which I'll be getting back to shortly, just that I had a busy week) but this actually affects me personally....I mean not in a serious way, but I happen to be a Sprint customer. As a matter of fact Professor P & I are both Sprint customers. One thing we both discuss is how poor the quality of service (both the plans, and actual connections) have gotten in our areas since their merger with Nextel. I actually had the option of going with anew company (I was REALLY considering AT&T), but alas I went back to Sprint because they had a phone I which met the specifications I was looking for, for the right price. I would've jumped to T-Mobile, but I heard their service where I live isn't all that.

HOODMAN CLOTHING

Big ups to Eddie Huang over at Hoodman Clothing!

If you followed the links over on my Random Obama News post, you'll see that I made note of the fact that tshirt company Upper Playground is now endorsing Obama and producing some shirts with his likeness on it. I also mentioned as if every tshirt company is doing it and linked it to the Hoodman company. In actuality, Hoodman Clothing was probably the first indie streetwear company to endorse Obama (at least to my recollection) on a shirt. I hastily linked it because it was the only other t-shirt that came to mind. My bad to Hoodman and anyone who thought they were swaggerjacking. In all actuality, Hoodman is probably the originator, and they also contribute to his campaign funds. Eddie over @ Hoodman just wanted to clarify. If you get a chance definitely check out their site. If you've been following independent streetwear lately, you'll find that Hoodman has been blowing up like Curtis in '03.

Webbie ft. Lil Boosie & Lil Phat "Independent"

Many of you are probably scratching your heads wondering why I would post anything related to this man. His 15-seconds of fame can be attributed to a song in which the hook was "Girl gimme that p----." And to top it off his return to the mainstream came in the form of a song with him and two other guys rapping about being dusted off for being fresh (that would be "Wipe Me Down" for those unfamiliar). You can crucify me for this all you want but when I actually listened to what Webbie and his cohorts were saying in this song I actually had a macro-shred of respect for dude. Its an ode to independent women. Which may strike you as a complete buck-80 from "Gimme That."

Interview With "Stuff White People Like"

The folks over at Assimilated Negro (that's really the title of the blog) have a 2 part interview up with the man that's been creating a huge buzz on the internet with his Stuff White People Like blog. It's a blog so amusing Sickamore and Kanye felt obligated to put people on. Props to Racialicious for finding it.

"Stuff White People Like: Well remember a lot of the white people I'm lampooning (including myself) always can laugh at the comic view stuff because we're like "yeah, those OTHER white people, they are ridiculous." I grew up in Chinatown, in Toronto East Chinatown. a neighborhood bordered by a housing project, greektown, and little india. the neighborhood was always safe, but it's gentrified like crazy in the past ten years. but I would say growing up there made me aware of whiteness right away. I knew most chinese slurs for white people by age 10. but at the same time, I wasn't isolated. Toronto produces some pretty diverse crews of friends"

Anthony Hamilton ft. Ghostface Killah "Do You Feel Me" Remix

This would be the remix to the lead single from the American Gangster Soundtrack. Not sure how new it is, but I found it on NahRight.com. I enjoyed the track. Some may not understand Ghost going hard on his second verse especially on such a mellow track, but I can appreciate the contrast. Coincidentally I was listening to Ain't Nobody Worryin' the other day. How does everyone else feel about the song?

Bill O Reilly Uses the Word "Lynching"....in Reference to Michelle Obama

This really troubles me being as how my last post was on Malcolm X (which i literally just posted like 15 minutes ago). I know there's going to be a those share of people out there that might not see the harm in O'Reilly using this word. The word lynching has a disturbing and insidious history. You can look it up. Maybe I'm over-exaggerating, but I feel as if what O'Reilly said was quite possibly worse than what Imus became famous for. O'Reilly not only used a term that became synonymous with Blacks being hung from trees by mobs of racist whites, but used it in regards to Michelle Obama. Lynching became so bad that there was a proposal for a bill against it (that was unfortunately voted down).

I know I'm a day late with it. Props to NahRight for this.

Akira Movie in the Works...Yellow Rebel hoping they cast accordingly

So I got an alert through my email that Leonardo DiCaprio is in line to develop a movie based on the classic manga Akira. Peep this quote from Hollywood Reporter.

"Ruairi Robinson has been hired to direct what would ideally be a two-part epic. Gary Whitta is writing the adaptation, which DiCaprio will produce via his Appian Way shingle. Andrew Lazar is also producing via his Mad Chance shingle. Jennifer Davisson, who heads up Appian, will also be involved in some producorial capacity."

You can peep the full article here.

For those who aren't aware, Kanye's video for "Stronger" was based off of this particular Japanese movie. Not that it really matters, but my biggest concern is how this film is going to be casted. I really hope they stay true to an Asian cast. Rarely are any Japanese animated movies brought to life with an American budget, and if they are the lead role generally goes to a Caucasian male. Case in point the proposed Dragonball Z movie will feature Justin Chatwin as Goku. Aside from the next Harold and Kumar movie, it'd be nice if there were some more Asian male protagonist. If we did, maybe this guy would have one less thing to blog about.

Will.I.X-Man

If you've keep a keen eye out for random news updates (as I do..far too many times), you'll probably have noticed that some outlets have publicized that Black Eyed Peas producer, member, frontman, etc., has signed on to appear in the new X-Men spin off movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this. Not that I have anything against Will.I.Am (I actually liked BEP during their pre-Fergie days), but I'm really more concerned about how this movie will shape. I mean I'm investing a lot more hope in this than the other movie featuring a BEP member.

My biggest concern is the overall direction of this franchise. The Marvel movie franchises as a whole have a lot resting on their shoulders. The last X-Men movie, although successful, was a disappointment to many of the fans. As my friend put it "It was like X-Men for Dummies." It killed off the nucleus of the team, and went on to leave us with a sloppy ending. Same with Spiderman 3. Those who know me, know that I'm huge on Spiderman. (*SPOILER ALERT*)They killed off Venom, literally, as soon as they introduced him (which is HUGE disappointment being as how he was perhaps, the greatest Spiderman villain of all time). These were the 2 most important Marvel franchises. Marvel is only able to release 2 films in 2009 due to the writers strike (Wolverine being one of them), which means things will be looking kind of tight. Hopefully they will pull through.

Flashing Lights Redux....

As I mentioned on my blog which contained the Flashing Lights video, a lot of people were probably not going to enjoy that video because of its short length and its rather random reference to an old James Bond film. Despite all of that, I've come to one general conclusion: Rita G is famous now because of this video.

For those still unfamiliar, Rita G was the voluptuous woman who closes the trunk on Kanye 'Goodfellas' style in the video. However, given all of the hoopla afterwards, that video has definitely made her famous. Come to think of it, after watching the video I was wondering who this mysterious woman was and many of my friends were asking the same thing (word up Vjay & Neurotic Neuron).

I was going through the Feeds and came across a new article from MTV article about the video and the confusion surrounding it. Over course, most the article is about Ms. G (including her commentary and experience during the filming).

I know Jay says he's the Hymon Roth of this, but I feel like Kanye is too. If you talk to me in person I often say that Kanye really is the biggest rapper since Jay-Z (think about it--there aren't too many rappers on the cover of GQ). My friend Daze (I see you Project GAS!) once referred to Kanye as the "Madonna of Hip-Hop." Since College Dropout, the careers of Twista, Common, Slum Village, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Daft Punk have received boosts. Sure they were all well-received in their respective communities (Daft Punk are VERY much stablished), but West kind of gave them that mainstream boost that tipped the scales taking them from famous niche act, to visible mainstream act. This mans iconicity has allowed those associated with anything he does to establish themselves in a very noteworthy way.

Check out the MTV article here.

Leave some feedback if you get a chance.

"The saddest thing to me is that he, and others, continuously get credit for stuff that they didn’t even really help set up. I honestly even wonder if people care about exactly what he did. I’ve had people look me dead in the face and say things such as 'I’d rather be 50 Cent than MLK'. Our generation doesn’t care. I’ve always noticed the respect and admiration that many of my contemporaries have had for other prominent scholars and activists."

My Thoughts on Racial Profiling

(image via NY Daily news)

Professor P always reminds me that, “the more things change, the more things stay the same.” It sounds oxymoronic, but whenever me and him delve into conversation, it’s really an observational affirmation that the same issues plaguing our generation was plaguing other generations, and that even as the years progressed, the problems didn’t go away.

After I read that Daily News article on Blacks & Latinos being frisked by NYPD, I immediately thought of what P said. In all seriousness, I honestly believe that the harassment of Blacks and Latinos at the hands New York City’s “Finest” will never end. To nip it in the bud early, this will not be an angry “F—the Police” rhetoric. I’m a believer in the human spirit and that there are cops who are trying to do the right thing. However, we tend to gravitate towards the most negative of news and the most memorable of news tends to be the worst (e.g. 9/11…I don’t even have to describe it, we all know it simply by date).

Racial profiling goes well beyond the confines of NYC; it’s a social sickness that afflicts other countries and is generally felt the most by those of African-descent. It’s a humiliating experience and a polarizing issue. It is an issue so unique to the communities of color that explaining it to your average run-of-the-mill white pundit (read: Bill O’Reilly), its’ almost like speaking an ancient language. In some ways I’m in that category; I’m Asian. As a rule of thumb, Asian’s are not classified as a socially disadvantaged minority, more so a silent minority (pardon my own generalizations). However, I can’t help but think back to an incident in 2007, when I was riding in a car with some college friends off-campus. It was a late Friday evening, and we were just driving around aimlessly (I guess the proper euphemism is “joyriding) and sure enough the police pull us over. Mind you we didn’t do anything; we were just driving.

As usual, we get the typical are you under the influence?-please step out of the car-what’s that in the bag?-rhetoric. And even more typical was the fact that my friends who were in the driver and passenger seats were black. The difference this time is that me, being an Asian male, was in the back to share this experience with the both of them.

It’s degrading, and not only because its an unwarranted search, but the fact that we as taxpayers actually put money into these guys checks to ensure that hey are “just doing their job.” To read about it is one thing; to be in the car watching this happen and seeing as how it sucks a good 15-20 minutes out of ones life is another.

I have this theory that for those that have simply read about racial profiling or have their preconceived notions about those that are being profiled have gone under the notion that those that are getting searched probably deserve what they are getting, that there is something about them that is inherently alarming. I was with two college friends when we got pulled over. I’ve had roommates on their way to work get pulled over and had their car confiscated for narcotics (of which they never had), and friends in graduate school harassed by cops. Late January, a Black cop was killed in White Plains by OTHER cops as he sought help. This is something that goes well beyond just appearances, there’s a higher power that’s enabling this. It’s only a matter of time before enough becomes enough.

So it's NBA All Star Weekend...

I'm a big NBA fan, and most would probably expect me to post something hyping up the All-Star Weekend. Unfortunately, as big as a fan that I am, I've never been huge on the All-Star game. My gripe with it is the fact that it really comes off as a giant corporate advertisement. It's a good look for the players involved in it, and the league should be proud to have organized such a noteworthy event. However, it's not exactly a serious game being as how most of the people involved in it are the franchise players for their teams. Whether they win or they lose, they each know that at the end of the game they have a team that they have to look out for and a championship in April that they have to compete for.

Don't get me wrong; I'll probably still watch the game. This is merely an explanation as to why I'm not all hyped up about the All-Star the way I was with the Superbowl. For those that are interested feel free to take my little quiz:

Rebel Music coming soon....

Hey folks just to give everyone an update, most of those that voted in my little election for the title of a Music Review blog felt Rebel Music would be the most appropriate title for that section. With that said, I will be starting the Rebel Music section next week.

Black History Month Tribute

Hey folks sorry for my lack of updates....

News has been a little slow these last few days. Just to keep things going, here's my next BHM tribute....

Angela Davis

To be blunt, most of my generation probably has barely the faintest idea as to who this women is. Your average close-minded individual probably thinks of her as simply that 'lady with the afro.' Well garcon, she's more than that. She's an ex-member of the Black Panther Party, who was falsely imprisoned for a crime, received an acquittal and has traveled the world speaking about social injustices....

You can check out the Wikipedia.org entry on her. Feel free to comment away........

New Ghostface video "We Celebrate"

Found this on YouTube via RealTalkNY.net

SMH....

Remember that post where I said it would be ill if they brought back Malcolm X hats? Well I was taking a gander at Hypebeast.com and according to the link--the good folks at American Needle I guess got inspired because of Black History Month and have developed this...

Not so bad right? But peep this....

Not that I'm a hater or anything, but this hat doesn't quite sit well with me. I dunno, if buying one had some type of social cause connected to it--e.g. buying one helps support the Malcolm X Grass Roots Movement, than I probably wouldn't be raising my eyebrow but I'm on the fence right now. There's also Red Foxx hats that will be accompanying these Malcolm X hats.

Super Tuesday

I'm not quite sure if its necessary to remind my NY people that today is Super Tuesday (in all seriousness I had no idea that this was the designated name for the day of the primary elections until this year), so if when you're all done with the Giants parade, remember to hit up your local voting booths (which should be in your respective communities at public institutions like schools, churches, etc) to vote.

Here's a song released by Kidz In the Hall a few months ago in support of Barack:

Black History Month Tribute

Like I stated in my "Black History Month" post, I said I was going to randomly post stuff that had historical resonance. Here's my latest....

Tribute to Nina Simone

One of my professor's played this song during class once. Many may recognize that it was sampled by Common on Finding Forever's "Misunderstood." A powerful song with a powerful message.

My First NY Knicks Game....

So as many may find it surprising, I am a lifelong New Yorker and I had never been to a NY Knicks game up until this night. And boy what timing for me to attend a Knicks game. For those that followed I watched the NY Knicks lose to the LA Clippers. Big shout out to my boy Chris & his father for hooking me up with the tix. Much appreciated and I was very thankful for the experience.

Anyhow, the Knicks managed to blow a 12-point lead in the 3rd Quarter. I still had a good time nonetheless, but the Knicks still have ways to go. I guess asking for two NY teams to win 2 nights in a row is asking too much lol.

GIANTS WON THE SUPERBOWL!!!!

You all probably know by now, but yes the Giants won the Superbowl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I won't lie I had my doubt but that 4th Quarter proved to the world that they weren't going to walk away empty handed. My hats off to them. My right hand homey Professor P is a lifelong Giants, and the victory more than made his night.

Now that Superbowl mania has passed, I should be resuming usual updates. My weekly music review will be up shortly, as well as the resurrected Top 5. Also--I wanted to do spotlight weblogs of up & coming acts. I was recently put on to Janelle Monae (thanks Ambuscade!) and want to give a little shine to up& coming acts who I think are noteworthy. Also, just putting this out there--I was also considering having a weekly spotlight on a fellow blogger who I think deserves some shine (e.g. Weekly spotlight on: On The Writers Block). What do yall think?

Congrats to Eli Manning, who was named MVP!

Superbowl Sunday folks!

Results of the survey say that 58% of those that took think the Giants will win the Superbowl!

Since it's Superbowl Sunday, I'm a little hesitant to put any serious posts on here. It's like a national holiday so I imagine most you will be glued to the TV screens come 6 o clock. Anyhow I'll probably have some stuff up after the game is over. Enjoy the game everyone!

Black History Month

It dawned on me the other day after I posted my Chinese New Year blog, that I overlooked another topic of importance: It's Black History Month.

Rather than post the video for that Master P song (which I applaud him and Romeo for the effort, but I can't help but cringe a little hearing it), I want to post a video that had historical resonance. With that said I present this...

Many don't realize that February was the month Malcolm was assassinated (Feb. 21, 1965).
As a historical tribute I will try and post videos/documents of relevance throughout the month. If yall have any suggestions, let me know!

Yellow Rebel Meets Wasalu Muhammad Jacu

So if you saw my last entry, you'll know that I went to the Lupe autograph session over at J&R Music World in lower Manhattan. I stood in line in windy, brick weather for roughly 2 hours for something that I thought was going to involve live music.

That was really the only disappointing part. Other than that I got the CD and I got an autograph. Couldn't get a pic with Wasalu, but whatever. I don't expect too much these, and certainly not at autograph signings. Initially, I wasn't going to purchase it, as an old roommate of mine that "borrowed" my Food & Liquor album promised that he was going to get the The Cool for meas means of replacement. Needless to say I'm still waiting.

I was hoping to promote the weblog while I was there --e.g. have Wasalu hold this last minute sign that I made...

Pardon the reverse job courtesy of the macbook.

On the brightside I was able to snap this pic Lu...

And of course I got the autograph.

Wish he woud've personalized it, but beggars can't be choosers.

Anyhow leave comments.

Be Kind Rewind

Since no one else is hyping this, lemme do Dante a favor....

Starring Jack Black & Dante

who's down?

Gee how did I know....

(via Yahoo! news)

So according to a Yahoo! news link that I saw, Bucky (Cap's ole' sidekick from back in the day) will be taking over the role of Captain America.

To be honest, I dunno how I feel about this. Bucky is perhaps the most logical choice to fulfill the role of Captain America, but I'm sure some are anticipating Steven Rogers to come back from the dead.

From a certain standpoint, the death of Captain America stood as a metaphorical way of saying that America is dead (along with Hip-Hop and slew of other things).

How does everyone else feel?

This month...

Ah, yes...it's the first day of February...you know what that means....

CHINESE NEW YEAR!!!!
